The lazy days of summer are upon us, but that doesn’t mean you should get lax about keeping your pets safe. While playtime in the backyard, a quick trip in the car or a long nap in the sun is tons of fun for your pet, fun could quickly turn into a dangerous situation.
Here are 4 ways to make sure your pets are safe this summer.
- Give your pup a good brushing. Grooming your pets keeps their coats nice and cool. It can also help prevent summer skin problems, like “hot spots.” The Association of Professional Dog Trainers recommends you don’t shave long-haired animals down – this inhibits their ability to deal with temperature changes. Removing the dead hair is the best way to help them tolerate the summer sun.
- Do not leave your buddy in the car. According to NBCNews.com, a 72-degree day can turn your car into a 116-degree oven. A short 15 minute stop is enough to cause your pet to have “everything from nerve damage, heart problems, liver damage, systemic organ failure,” or death.
- Keep your four-legged friend extra cool. If you leave your pets outside, leave more water than you normally would so that they can stay hydrated during the hotter times of day. Make sure your outdoor pets have a nice shady area they can lay in, and get a pet sitter for extremely hot days. Give your pet a nice icy treat to keep them cool, like ice cubes, small bites of frozen tuna or strips of frozen hotdog!
- Repel dangerous mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are the primary cause of heartworm in dogs. This parasite can cause injury to the lungs, arteries and the heart. Signs of heartworm include coughing, difficulty breathing, vomiting and lethargy.
